  1. (I was going to ask you to post your reaction to Hall's comments on the character/role of the gangster... but we're going to talk about that in class.)

    1. The Gangster's roll in the film was to give a juxtaposition to the Match King and how he as fallen to a low life status from his high class one. Also it show how low down the Match King really was since the beginning with his patsy schemes to get money.

  2. second question: Can you offer an analysis of the female characters in the film? How is Marta "different"? Why does Paul Kroll fall for her over the others?

  3. Marta is a different female character because she was the only girl in the Match King's life that was not interested in his smooth talk or his flashing of money. She was also the only girl that was explicitly given a job and to be independent in the film. She was also very similar to the Match King in the sense that she would manipulate him to try to get him away from her as he manipulates the banking system to keep his business afloat.
